Technical Requirements: Musition is available for Windows
only. Lab packs and networkable site licenses are also available

Windows: Pentium or faster, Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP/NT4 or
later, 32Mb+ RAM, 50Mb free hard disk space, CD-ROM drive,
soundcard, MIDI keyboard (optional).
Description: Musition2 covers 25 topics which are organized
into four subject areas—Music Reading, Terms and Symbols, Key
Centers, and Instruments. The program itself is divided into three
sections—Information, Assessment, and Administration. The
Information section serves as the instruction section. The
Assessment section grades and scores the student. The
Administration section is where the teacher-only tasks are performed
(set up classes, review assessment data, create quizzes, etc.)
The Assessment section includes learning helps as well as straight
assessment. Students are allowed to compare right answers to their
wrong answers. If the student gets stuck on an item, they may click
the Info button for detailed on-screen . Therefore, instruction is
included in both the Information and Assessment sections.
One of the most appealing characteristics of Musition is that an
incredible amount of instruction occurs without the teacher around.
The student learns from his mistakes and is rewarded for his
progress. The program is organized by levels of difficulty. The
student begins at Level One in a particular and if he performs well,
The Professor can be set to automatically move the student to the
next level. Conversely, students not performing well may
automatically be moved to the next lower level. The level of
achievement for each is customizable in the Administration Section.
Ease of set-up: Good.
Ease of use: Good.
Effective teaching of material: Very thorough.
Comments:
In the Rhythm Tapping topic, you may discover errors when
attempting to use the space bar to tap in the rhythms shown on the
screen. In Windows, I was able to correct this problem by tightening
the latency of the sound card through Control Panel>Sounds and
Audio Devices>Sound Playback>Advanced>Performance> and
setting the Hardware Acceleration to FULL.
Recommendation:
This tried and true software program is a must for schools, colleges,
and universities. Its ability to teach on many levels from beginning
through advanced levels makes it extremely versatile. Musition2
would also be a tremendous addition to the private studio placed on a
workstation.
